Modern Lighting Choices That Save You Money

Part 2

(Continuation)But today, there are many more energy-efficient lighting fixtures to meet your lighting needs.

CFLs

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are simply the curly models of the long tube fluorescent lights that you are already familiar with. These fixtures use less electricity compared to traditional incandescents. In fact, a typical CFL bulb will pay for itself in less than nine months and then start saving money each month. Energy Star qualified CFL bulbs to use approximately 1/4 of the energy and last 10 times longer than the incandescent bulb that gives the same amount of light. CFL bulbs will usually pay for themself in energy savings in less than nine months and then continue to save you money every month. A CFL bulb uses 1/3 of the energy used by a halogen incandescent bulb.

CFL bulbs come in a wide range of light colors including warm tones such as white and yellow. Some fixtures are encased in a cover to further diffuse the light and provide a similar shape to the bulb that you are replacing. If you want a bulb that could be dimmed, you should check the package to ensure you purchase a CFL with that feature. Fluorescent bulbs contain small amounts of mercury. Hence, they should be recycled at the end of their lifespan. Many retailers will recycle CFLs for free.

LEDs

Light-emitting diodes or LEDs are a type of semiconductors that convert electricity into light. They were originally popular as indicators and traffic lights. Today, LEDs are one of the most energy-efficient and rapidly developing technologies. In fact, Energy Star qualified LED lights to use only 20% of the energy and last more than 15-25 times than the incandescent bulbs they replace. On the other hand, LED lightbulbs to use only 25-30% of the energy and last 8-25 times longer than halogen incandescents.

LED bulbs are available in many products today including replacements for 40W, 60W, and 75W traditional reflectors and incandescents used in small track lights, recessed fixtures, desk lamps, outdoor lights, and kitchen under cabinet lighting. They are available in a wide variety of colors, and some are dimmable with convenient features like motion sensors and daylight. LEDs perform well both outdoors and indoors due to their cold environmental compatibility. Step lights, pathway lights, and porch lights are some of the most popular LED lights for your outdoor space. LEDs are expensive but they will still save you money because they are low energy and long-lasting. Expect the prices to come down as more products enter the market.
